The Tegarayama Botanical Garden shows its revolving exhibits in the brick entrance plaza, and the permanent exhibits in two greenhouses, one large and one small. In addition, there is a rock garden, herb garden, and flowerbeds. The views of the garden and its surroundings from the rest house are spectacular, and you will surely enjoy spending some time here, surrounded by flowers. Tegarayama Botanical Garden’s permanent exhibits include rare tropical and subtropical foliage plants and fruit-bearing trees, cacti and other desert plants, tropical orchids, begonias and carnivorous plants, for a total of 25,000 plants, with 1,500 species in 120 different families. As the name implies, Himeji’s city flower, the white egret flower, has the color and form of a white egret. It was designated as the city flower in August 1966, as a fitting match with the city’s symbol, Himeji Castle, also known as White Egret Castle. The white egret flower blooms in summer, but the garden has a special greenhouse where it can be seen flowering year-round. The garden also houses a special booth where the Aristolochia debilis, a plant beloved of the city’s butterfly, the Chinese windmill, is cultivated. In addition, wild plants of the Harima region, especially those on the verge of extinction, are cultivated and shown, and the garden is also working on stock preservation. Other familiar plants that grow in hitherto less studied areas like the many reservoirs and canals in the region, rice paddies and undeveloped woodland surrounding the city in the hill country, are also presented. .
