Kokoen, the Nishi-Oyashikiato garden, opened in 1992 and shares the landscape with World Cultural Heritage Himeji Castle. It is a traditional round-the-pond style Japanese garden, designed to make best use of the layout of the Nishi-Oyashikiato, former samurai homes and paths discovered by archeological digs. Each time you pass through a gate or cross a moat, one of the nine different gardens presents itself for your enjoyment. The atmospheric feeling of old Edo that the garden engenders makes it popular as a location for shooting historical dramas. The Sojuan teahouse in the Tea Garden, built in the sukiya architectural style, offers matcha tea for ¥500 per person.Visitors can also contemplate the garden while dining at the Kassuiken restaurant.
