The Folklore Museum was created from the relocated former home of the wealthy merchant family of Himeji City’s Funatsu-cho, Mitachi. It has been selected as one of Hyogo prefecture’s 100 best residences, and feels like you might run into someone from olden times at any moment. The museum contains a huge number of folk art items collected by Yataro Shimazu, head of the museum, from all around the Kinki region. It is well known as one of the few folklore “halls of fame” in Japan. Part of the vast collection of almost 100,000 artifacts of folk art, farm tools and more is open to viewing by the public. .
